Art Monument and History

Pigna has the richest heritage in the upper Nervia Valley. It still has its medieval fortified structure With communicating obscure narrow alley called "chibi", meandering under the houses. At the very top of the village where centuries ago stood the castle, there is now a square called: Piazza Castello. Its main interests are the carvings, found on door-frames, wich once ornated the houses of the rich.

 

La Loggia was the seat of trade, commerce, and collection of taxes. The antique measures for collecting taxes in Kind, are still there. The church of St Michael, probably built in XII century, dominates the village. On the façade, in black stone, stands the statue of St Michael killing the demon. The white marble rose window with twelve spokes representing the twelve Apostles. Inside, behind the main altar, you can see the "Polyptych" painted by Canavesio in 1500.

The 56 meters belfry is the focal point of the village. Next to St. Michael is the baroque church of St. Antonio. At a walking distance is the romanesque Chapel of St Bernardo, known for its frescoes of "The last Judgment", by Canavesio in 1482. You can also visit the remains of St. Thomas Church, founded by the Benedictines.
